How do you guys deal with slow play? I am of course assumming that you aren't one of these guys who have a 5 minute pre shot routine.
I just started playing match play for my club and it seems that the better a player thinks he is the slower he plays. The guy I played yesterday was lying belly down on the greens from 3 or 4 angles while reading putts... the round took 6 hours!

Am I right in thinking there are no specific rules to increase the pace if play? Shouldnt we be keeping up with the pace of play? The group in front were on the 18th green as we walked down the 15th fairway.

The only way I can deal with a slow player is to leave him and refuse to play with him. That way I don't have to take a share of the blame.

I agree but that's hard to do when you're playing match play against him.

In a match it's very tough. You can slow another guy down, but it's almost impossible to speed someone up. Any chance he was doing it out of gamesmanship, trying to get under your skin? Perhaps you were showing your irritation, and he was playing to it. Obviously I don't know, just a thought.

Tournament or Match Play does reduce your options, though you can still walk off if your round is spoiled anyway. The fun part is that his score won't be validated by you so that's a bit of vengeance.

Habitually slow players are selfish people. Most of the time they are just ignorant and those can be forgiven but the ones who are habitually slow and aware of it, I find easy to leave.

I would bring it up to your club and the committee who runs the matches. There should be penalties for pace of play just as there is any stroke play event. I have seen pace of play in competitions speed up tremendously when the officials finally decide to start penalizing players for pace of play rather than just threatening or giving the friendly pace of play reminders. Guys that can't play a round in 4 hours need to be hit where it hurts.....on the scorecard.

Don't let it bother you. It's not something you can control (other people's pace).
